What is Data and its future

Data is the building block of the information highway that controls every aspect of our life. It has been correctly described as the "new oil". To mine it and control it every country and all the biggest companies are trying to get hold of the same one way or the other.

Recording data in a way which is easy to retrieve has been been at the forefront of all the database software created. Starting from the Binary Files to the NOSQL the idea is to optimize the storage of the data to the retrieval.

50 years back data was stored and measured in Bytes, KB and MB which is now being replaced by TB and ZB or Zettabytes = 1 Trillion GB. That is some jump in amount of data

The storage mediums evolved from Magnetic tapes to 8 inch floppy disk, 4 inch FDD to CTDs. DVD,CD and Pen drives gave the ability to be mobile with huge amounts of data. With the advent of High speed internet the preferred storage being on the cloud in Data warehouses. This has given the new puzzle of cross border storage which is a challenge for the countries who value the safety and security of the citizens data and thus the rush for localization of data at facilities inside the countries borders.

It is already evident that in the near future wars in the countries will not be fought on the traditional methods but on the cyber space. Those who own , protect and use the data judiciously will come out winners in this decade.
