Software Industry is in tailspin. Talent is short and manpower requirements are much more.
The Industry is offering lucrative deals to those who are available with proven track record and ability to code. Being in this industry for the last 30 years + , what sort of candidates one chooses is a million dollar question.
Is it the brilliant coder or an ethical , morally upright coder who can deliver. This is an difficult question to be answered and baffles many.
The staffing issue is a test of both. Even though judging a technological ability is easier it is very difficult to benchmarks EQ and ethical values.
The bigger organizations due to brand value attract the best talent and even those who are very low on ethical and people skills, stay overboard, carrying on with a face of a upright person.
The unfortunate part is when talent with the dark side get elevated to the senior positions it is a paradox as they become leaders with a subtle dark side to them. These then gets percolated to the teams working under them as
they are deemed as role models.
For mid and small setups such people are a nightmare as they are unpredictable and can upset plans and calculations.
So in conclusion for me to choose or suggest an employee , the primary check should be his moral and ethical track record. You need to look at the family, work background and talk to the candidate on generic level to gauge him or her as a person .
My Experience , long and short term , Ethical and Morally upright people are your assets. All other are liabilities.
